Malkani Retina Center offers cataract surgery for patients who need to improve their vision and quality of life. A cataract is a clouding of the lens in the eye that affects vision, according to the National Eye Institute. Cataracts are mostly due to aging and common in older people; by age 80, more than half of all Americans have either had a cataract or cataract surgery. Naples and surrounding area residents experiencing vision problems due to cataracts can make an appointment with Malkani Retina Center to discuss treatment options, including cataract surgery. Naples patients can access one of our three convenient locations in Lee, Collier and Charlotte.
A cataract clouds the lens of the eye, the clear part that helps to focus light, or an image, on the retina, according to the National Eye Institute. The retina is the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. In a healthy eye, light passes through the lens to the retina, where it is changed into nerve signals that are sent to the brain. If the lens is clouded by a cataract, the image a person sees is blurry. Cataracts can be removed with cataract surgery. Patients experiencing vision loss that affects everyday activities may consider cataract surgery. Patients may also consider cataract surgery if the cataract is affecting or preventing treatment of another condition, like macular degeneration or diabetic retinopathy.
According to the National Eye Institute, the clouded lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens during cataract surgery. Naples and surrounding area patients can schedule an initial exam with Malkani Retina Center to detect the presence of any cataracts. If it’s decided to have cataract surgery, patients will be examined pre-surgery to determine the right type of replacement lens. Itching and mild discomfort are normal symptoms after cataract surgery. Patients may also experience some fluid discharge, as well as sensitivity to light and touch. Mild discomforts should disappear after one or two days. Several weeks after cataract surgery, patients will be examined again to check healing and progress.
Cataract surgery is one of the most common operations in the U.S. According to the National Eye Institute, 90 percent of people have better vision after having cataract surgery. Patients who are hesitant about cataract surgery may consider new glasses, brighter lighting, anti-glare sunglasses or magnifying lenses to treat early cataract symptoms. Wearing sunglasses or a wide-brimmed hat can also help protect vision, as can quitting smoking and eating green, leafy vegetables, fruits and other foods with antioxidants.
